Tere Stubbe “Pinceladas de Luz”

Tere Stubbe

Pinceladas de luz

Tere Stubbe

RESIDENTE Teach JBalvin how to RAP.

March 4, 2022by remNo Comments

Superstar Residente teach Jbalvin how to Rap.

Residente (René Pérez Joglar) is a rapper, singer, writer, producer, film director, and, with his stepbrother Visitante (Eduardo José Cabra Martínez) co-founder of the award-winning rap group Calle 13. They have won 24 Latin Grammys, the most awarded to a single group in Latin music history. Residente possesses a Fine Arts degree and is known for his social and humanitarian work on behalf of UNICEF and Amnesty International.

The son of an actress, Residente grew up in a middle class neighborhood. He began studying music and art as a child. His first obsession was baseball (one that continues), but he learned to play guitar and drums; he was largely self-taught. In high school he was a drummer in the school band. After graduation, he studied Fine Arts at Escuela de Artes Plásticas, and upon completing his Bachelor’s degree, he won a scholarship to Georgia’s Savannah College of Arts & Design for post-graduate work. To relieve the pressure of school, he began to write poems and rap songs, choosing his stage name, “Residente Calle 13”, during those years. After receiving his Master’s degree, he moved to Barcelona where he studied and made films before returning to Puerto Rico. He earned his living for a time doing illustrations, but grew bored. With reggaeton exploding in Puerto Rico, he eventually found his way into the music business by editing and directing videos.

In 2004 he formed Calle 13 with Visitante. After struggling for a number of years, the pair signed to White Lion Records, which issued their controversial singles “Querido F.B.I.” (the first track Residentesent them as a demo) and “Se Vale To-To” (their breakthrough hit) and got them a deal with Sony.

Calle 13 went on to become one of the best-selling groups in Puerto Rican music history, and influential far beyond its borders, throughout Latin America, the United States, Europe, and even Asia with their distinctive, socially conscious, and utterly musical brand of hip-hop. They inspired and influenced an entire generation of rappers and musicians with their recordings, concerts, and videos. Though their music initially came under fire from journalists and politicians, it was the Puerto Rican governor himself, Anibal Acevedo Vilá, who in 2005 admitted listening to them and having his eyes opened by their music. Their reputation became one of artists, statesmen, and national heroes.

Calle 13 began a series of collaborations with other artists including Nelly Furtado, Alejandro Sanz, and Cuba’s Orishas, to name a few. As their fame grew and awards were bestowed, the band’s artistic ambitions knew no bounds and they added elements of bomba plena, salsa, funk, rock, and jazz to their sound.

MultiViralFrom their self-titled debut in 2005 to 2013’s Multi_Viral, each recording went platinum; all have placed on the rap charts — internationally — three made the pop Top 200, and all have made the Top 25 on the Latin albums and Tropical charts. Various singles have hit the top spot on several charts simultaneously. Calle 13 went on hiatus after Multi_Viral‘s world tour. Residente almost immediately announced a solo album and began traveling and recording in various countries including China, Russia, Spain, Ghana, and even Siberia.

The Hamilton MixtapeHe appeared with K’naan, Snow Tha Product, and Riz MC on the track “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done),” which was featured on the Hamilton Mixtape. In December of 2016, Residente launched a website for his upcoming album that teased songs, offered video clips, and provided documentary information about his travels and recording. He dropped a pre-release video single in January entitled “Somos Anomales” — the provocative document was directed by Argentine film director Alejandro Agresti and garnered over four-and-a-half-million views within a few weeks of its release. His self-titled full-length album was issued by Sony in the spring of 2017. The high-charting release took home the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music album. It was nominated for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards. July 2019 saw Residente issue the high-energy single “Bellacosa.”

Busta Rhymes Credits Puerto Ricans & Blacks With Being Hip Hop Originators

March 27, 2018by remNo Comments

During Lottery.com’s Puerto Rico benefit concert, Busta Rhymes declared that Black and Puerto Rican people created hip hop… he also goes in and drops the mic. Busta Rhymes delivered a strong message, this past weekend, on the need to address the ignorance that many young artists and fans of hip-hop have towards the history of the genre.

The legendary rapper took a few moments out of his performance at the “Power To The People” benefit concert in Puerto Rico to toast to the role that Puerto Ricans played along with African American and Afro-Caribbeans in the creation of the Bronx born culture and music form. And in addition to acknowledging its roots, he urged elders who may find themselves in disagreement when the facts are ignored or distorted, to actively inform the next generation so that they can acquire the knowledge and pass it forward.

Puerto Ricans have played a fundamental role in the development of hip-hop since its inception in the early 1970’s. In those days they were primarily celebrated for their contributions to breakdancing and graffiti, but although their presence wasn’t as profound on the mic or in the DJ booth since day one there were definitely Ricans putting it down across all elements.

“I wanna remind everybody that may not know – how the origin of hip-hop was started. The origin of hip-hop was started by the power of Black and Puerto Rican people. In case you needed to be reminded,” Busta said to cheers from the Coliseo de Puerto Rico crowd. “A lot of motherf**kers wanna try to gentrify our culture. A lot of motherf**kers wanna try to act like they conveniently forget who fathered this s**t. Black people and Puerto Rican people together. We created the greatest culture in the f**king world and its called hip hop. Facts!”

Busta’s speech comes at a time when many have challenged the legitimacy of racially ambiguous artists like Cardi B and Bruno Mars benefitting from hip-hop’s newfound dominance over pop music.

Joel F. Pierluisi aka Danger Garden

June 9, 2016by remNo Comments
MR. DANGER GARDEN

JOEL PIERLUISI-CORDERO AKA MR. DANGER GARDEN

Born March 4, 1986, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Joel Pierluisi-Cordero (a.k.a. Mr. Danger Garden) began playing the bongos at age four and got his first drum set at age five.

Joel got his start at age 10 when he performed a live solo with cousin Jorge at the Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine “Evolution World Tour” at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in Puerto Rico. After getting a crowd of 12,000 people on their feet two nights in a row while playing the bongos, Joel became obsessed with performing on stage.

By age 12 he could play drums, percussion, bass, piano, and guitar.

He founded his first band, Umoja, with cousin Jorge in the year 2000. Umoja, the African term for Unity, was a reggae band that played for six years in Puerto Rico, releasing an album in 2003 that included radio hit No puedo olvidarte. Joel was the lead singer, drummer, composer and music director of Umoja, sharing stage with Gondwana, Sizzla, Midnite, Burning Spear, Jarabe de Palo, Sean Paul, Steel Pulse, Cultura Profética, and more.

In 2003 he played the drums for Daddy Yankee at House of Blues in Orlando and at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in Puerto Rico. Going back to where it all began was an amazing experience that led to many other opportunities.

In 2004 Joel played the drums once again at Coliseo Roberto Clemente, this time for Zion & Lennox. That same year, he also played drums for Vico C, Tego Calderon, and others.
Later that year he began his college career in marketing at the University of Puerto Rico while performing an average of three shows-a-week with his reggae band Umoja all over the island.

In 2007 he was called to play the drums for Wisin & Yandel’s concert in Venezuela. He had not much interest in reggaeton, but the experience of traveling and meeting new places caught his attention to this oportunity. After performing with the duo in their East-West tour across the US, all the way from Madison Square Garden in New York to the Staples Center in Los Angeles, he was hired as their official drummer and toured with them for four years. He played in Venezuela, México, Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, USA, Panama, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, El Salvador, Guatemala, Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Rome, and more.

Between travels while touring with Wisin & Yandel, Joel kept producing his music, sound design for commercials, and developing different musical arrangements in his home recording studio.

In 2008 he worked as music producer for Sebastian Foglia’s lounge projects: Foglia Lounge House Sound and Foglia Spread the News.

In 2010 he wanted to start his own electronic music project and got together with Sebastian Foglia to create the group “Foglia”. He took Sebastian’s lounge project and gave it an upbeat, electro dance twist with a lot of stage energy.

In 2011, they released the hit single Dime que hay and were the opening band for 30 Seconds to Mars at Coliseo de Puerto Rico and for Cut Copy and Panda at the Coors Light Indie Fest in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Foglia traveled to Miami where they electrified the crowds at Bardot and Pax with their unique sound, and were interviewed by CNN, Telemundo, NBC, Terra and Latinblah. In 2012 Joel and Sebastián went on separate journeys.

Joel started his own project called DANGER GARDEN (DNGR GRDN). Finally no mainstream, no opinions about the music from anyone else, just his music exactly the way he wanted it. DNGR GRDN is a mix of all the production influences in Joel’s life. His early reggae roots and electro dance influences brought Joel his own sound within the Indie-dance / House music genres. With a live show that consists of a “live production set” where Mr. Danger brings his production equipment to the stage, and improvises every sound creating a special live set for his audience on every show infused by his percussion background.

His live shows as well as his daily production tasks may include collaborations with different producers, musicians, singers, dj’s, and many other talented friends from the industry.

DON RIMX – New Mural on NYC

DON RIMX has finish his new master piece in the New York City. RIMX has move from San Juan, PR to promote his work around the world using as new home base in Florida.

“The evil with good goes out”

Mural in Jefferson St and St Nicholas Ave in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY.

David “Don Rimx” Sepulveda was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  His family lived in the public housing development, Nemesio R Canales, who in the 90s had a very high crime rate.  Drugs and gun violence were a part of his everyday life.  Through his parents watchful eyes Don Rimx was kept on the straight and narrow. They noticed his interest in drawing at a young age and nurtured it by enrolling him in weekend art classes at the local art school.  He later received his diploma from the Central High School of Visual Arts and went on to continue his education at the Escuela de Artes Plasticas.  Upon finishing his studies, he dedicated himself to incorporating the various techniques of classic art into urban art, with a specialization in murals. Lorenzo Homar, Jose Alicea, Rafael Tufino, Rembrandt, and Joaquin Sorolla, are just a few of the influences one see’s in the line work, color treatment and poetic imagery of his pieces.

In 2009, Don Rimx moved to Brooklyn, NY.  Life in the big city had a profound affect on his latest works, from the different cultures and styles to the many textures and materials.  The skeletal structures explore the synthesis of man and his city.  Resulting in works of art comprised of rigidity and personality.

“16 Barras” Brooklyn was an exploration of this connection.  Murals were painted throughout Brooklyn, of randomly chosen residents, interlaced with one number and word, that when put in numerical order, created a poem. It was meant to inspire people to search for the pieces to the puzzle, to get to know their borough and its residents. “16 Barras” received media coverage in the NY Daily News and various online publications. The concept was later extended to Puerto Rico and featured in the annual art event ‘La Campechada.’

Don’s also participated in national and international urban beautification projects like Artists for Israel, Los Muros Hablan New York & Puerto Rico and Art Basel Miami in the Wynwood Design District. Additionally he’s painted many murals around Brooklyn, at the Bushwick Collective and at the former 5Pointz Queens.

Don’s individual style bridged the gap between the streets and corporate America. His work caught the eye of a progressive commercial real estate developer and was commissioned to produce several grand scale murals in the Bryant Park area of NYC. The synthesis of the two resulted in breathtaking works of art. An arrangement so unique it received media coverage in the NY Times.

In the summer of 2014, Don Rimx and his family made the move to Miami Florida. The warm climate, Latino culture and large arts presence really attracted the artist, making him feel a little closer to home. Since the move Don was invited to the Brooklyn Museum as the guest artist for National Hispanic Heritage Month and has worked on a couple of projects with the Jordan sneaker brand. In the Miami area, he was one of the featured artists in the Cars Meet Art exhibit of the Miami Auto Show. And is currently one of 15 artists participating in the Beck’s Urban Canvas.

Don Rimx’s unparalleled artistry has set him apart from the rest; a classically trained fine artist, graffiti purist, grand scale muralist and new school tattoo artist. No matter the medium, he’s guaranteed to continue doing what he loves for many years to come.

Miguel Luciano’s Piragua Car

Miguel Luciano, Pimp My Piragua

Brooklyn artist Miguel Luciano brings his shaved ice cart to Philadelphia for the exhibit Global Warming at the Icebox. Here he is talking with Pepon Osorio and making a grape ice for a kid (he charges $2 although waived the price for the child). He got the block of ice in North Philly. He built the cart himself, fiberglas over MDF board. He had it painted at an auto detailing place and had it outfitted with stereo equipment and a DVD player, which shows a flyover of arctic ice with music.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Pimp My Piragua is a mobile public art project that commemorates the innovations of Latino street vendors, transforming a traditional pushcart for selling shaved ice (Piraguas) into a hyper-modified pushcart-tricycle with a hi-fi sound and video system.  This project was commissioned by the Queens Museum of Art in 2008.

The Borinqueña is the national anthem of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The current music and lyrics were written in 1903 and since then has been taught in schools and was adopted by most people. The music was made official by the government as the national anthem in 1952, and the letter in 1977. The title refers to the aboriginal Taíno name for the island of Puerto Rico, which was Boriken or Borinquen.

Henry Cole- Drummer

June 1, 2016by remNo Comments
Henry Cole- Drummer

Drummer Henry Cole is at the forefront of a growing wave of jazz innovation and cross-cultural rhythm in the 21st century. With his flexibility, grace and sheer power behind the drum kit, he has proven indispensable to the sound of some of the world’s most acclaimed jazz groups, including the Grammy-nominated Miguel Zenón Quartet (Awake, Esta Plena, Alma Adentro]), Grammy winner David Sánchez (Cultural Survival), the Alfredo Rodriguez Trio, and the all-star quartet “90 Miles” featuring Sánchez, Stefon Harris and Nicholas Payton.

Henry is also asserting himself as leader of the Afro-Beat Collective, which releases its debut album Roots Before Branches this fall in the United States. Drawing on the raw groove and momentum of Fela Anikulapo Kuti as well as the depth and complexity of modern jazz, Henry strives with the Afro Beat Collective to integrate all his varied influences, including Puerto Rican folklore, funk and R&B, jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythmic traditions.

The San Jose Mercury News praises Henry’s “explosively detailed” playing, and All About Jazz notes his ability to “make instantaneous, organic adjustments at every turn.” In an article for Modern Drummer titled “The Future of Drumming” (January 2006), Henry was cited as an outstanding young player to watch by illustrious fellow drummers Alex Acuña, John Riley and Antonio Sanchez. In a 2009 JazzTimes magazine feature, journalist Fernando Gonzalez explored Henry’s visionary approach, his translation of Puerto Rico’s street-style pandero requinto drumming to the drum set — just one example of Henry’s bridging of traditions and disciplines in the service of a unique individual sound.Born in 1979 and raised in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Henry relocated to San Juan in 1999 to study classical percussion at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico. He began his jazz immersion at Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 1998, but soon returned to San Juan, where he became one of the most in-demand and influential jazz drummers on the island. There he gained pivotal, formative experience in the varied music scene of Old San Juan: “It was very small,” Henry recalls, “but it had all styles and genres, so it was easy to go from one to the other and learn from all. I was playing rock, salsa, jazz, electronic music, all in the same week. That’s college right there.”During this time Henry worked extensively within and beyond the world of jazz, with artists such as Giovanni Hidalgo, Dave Valentin, Jerry Gonzalez, Danilo Pérez, Branford Marsalis, Luis Marin, William Cepeda’s Afro-Rican Jazz, salsa artists La PVC, the rock band Vivanativa and many more.

Relocating to New York, his current home base, in the fall of 2003, Henry received a scholarship to attend Manhattan School of Music and study with the great John Riley. Since completing his studies, Henry has performed with the likes of Chris Potter, Adam Rogers, Drew Gress, the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Big Band, Ray Barretto, Orlando “Puntilla” Rios, Papo Vazquez, Perico Sambeat, Paquito D’Rivera, David “Fathead” Newman, Kenny Werner, Mark Turner, the contemporary plena group Viento de Agua and many more. He has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe, Mexico and Central America, Korea and
Japan.

Besides his influential work with Miguel Zenón and David Sánchez — entailing appearances at the Village Vanguard and other world-renowned jazz venues — Henry can be heard on such fine recordings as Personalities by the Fabian Almazan Trio, Christian X Variations by Soren Moller with Dick Oatts & Kirin Winds, El Alquimista by Pete Rodriguez, and Rocket Science for Dummies by the electro/neo-soul group Astronauts of Antiquity. His work with dancer and choreographer Noemí Segarra includes the evening-length collaborative piece “De Rumbo De Rumba,” premiered at the Hostos Center for Arts & Culture in early April 2011. Henry also performs with Cuban-born, LA-based pianist Alfredo Rodriguez, who records for Quincy Jones’ Qwest label.

Henry is also a successful and sought-after educator, often substituting for his mentor John Riley at MSM and at SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Music. His quartet has also taken part in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Rhythm Road” (a.k.a. “Jazz Ambassadors”) program, which involves concerts, master classes and lecture-recitals for musicians. In addition, Henry has provided master classes and clinics under the auspices of Carnegie Hall, Marsalis Music and other institutions. He is sponsored by Vic Firth sticks, DW Jazz drums, Latin Percussion (LP) and Zildjian cymbals.

On his debut album Roots Before Branches, Henry has assembled musicians on the order of Sean Wayland, Adam Rogers, John Ellis, Miguel Zenón, David Sánchez, Soren Moller, Egui Santiago, Rey de Jesús, Hérmes Ayala, Roy Guzmán and more. Henry’s Afro-Beat Collective pushes the aesthetic of Miles
Davis’s Bitches Brew in a strong Afro-Caribbean direction, while also melding Fela’s Afrobeat sound with a jazz-rich vocabulary: “I imagine Fela’s band with Wayne Shorter or Lee Morgan playing the solos,” Henry muses. His main goal is to see music as One World, a space beyond styles, reaching out to audiences of all kinds with a message of determination and unity

Henry Cole- Drummer

Calma Carmona

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

The product of a nomadic existence, Calma Carmona’s musical background is as varied as the different cities where she lived and grew up. After seeing the world, she absorbed the aspects that appealed to her sensibilities and took the road that led her to the stage of Café Seda in Old San Juan in 2007. With the musical maturity she has gained in the last few years, Calma Carmona now aims to break with traditional patterns and create songs in her own way. As she said, “What I have always done well is express myself, that’s what fulfills me. I don’t want to do what everyone says I need to do”.

With her music denominated as Latin Soul, Calma Carmona has a display of influences ranging from Sade, Theolonious Monk and Santana, Ismael Rivera, Al Green, even PJ Harvey, La Lupe and Tina Turner. Her sound is painted with subtlety and passion, seeking to attract listeners with every verse and chorus. In all the cities she has walked on, Calma has had the opportunity to digest local and musical vibrations. As a gypsy moving from place to place, the artist she is today is now looking to share everything with her audience. It is with this desire in mind that Calma climbs on stage each night, seeking to turn spectators into believers with magic and intensity of her Latin Soul. “I give myself on stage. It is where I want to be,” said the artist.

In August 2013, Calma was voted MTViggy (previously known as MTVworld) Artist of the week. Late September 2013, Mun2 exclusively launched Calma’s first EP “There’s No Other Girl”, recorded live and produced by herself and her manager/producer Anthony Elizo as well as team of close friends. Calma feels that to launch her debut as a live recording clearly shows that she has nothing to hide. After years of training in the streets, the EP marks the culmination of her musical experience in Puerto Rico and gives us just a small glimpse into the wide variety of influences that inspire the singer. “That’s the fun part,” said the interpreter ‘Pa ‘Que Te Quejas’, “After this I can take any route. Just three days after Calma’s EP launch, she was chosen to open for Beyonce’s “Mrs. Carter World Tour” in Puerto Rico. Its evident Calma’s arrival has made quite some noise in both the Latin and the U.S industry. Calma is now left only with the memory of a young rookie, and instead we have an artist determined to captivate us over and over once she’s on stage, the world’s stage. info@calmacarmona.com. (787) 409-0295

Emiliano Martini:

This young Electronic Dance Music producer & DJ was born in the capital city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. From an early age his musical experiences and influences were ingrained with organic music genres such as Classic Jazz, New Age, Disco, Experimental, Latin music, and other worldwide styles. His father, a jazz musician & enthusiast, was feeding the ears of this young talent with good music for a long time, this and more drove Emiliano Martini to have a real passion for music in general, which made him learn much more about his surroundings in a more structured way. With the discovery of electronic music in his adolescence, he chose his preferred styles such as House, Techno, Minimal and Funk, in addition to that, he also made room for specific sounds like Chicago House, Detroit’s Electronic Music, Deep Tech & other groovy experimental electronic styles. After 2002 he decided to start learning about DJing performance, making him buy vinyl records every opportunity he got when he was outside of his country. After a long time learning and practicing his passion for electronic music at his home, he began exposing himself as an artist by playing at house parties, various stores, hotels and eventually at local electronic music events and exclusive venues in Puerto Rico, sharing the stage with various worldwide recognized DJ’s and producers like Holger Zilske aka Smash TV, Guido Schneider, Adultnapper, Dan Ghenacia, Jay Haze, Pillow Talk, Damian Lazarus, Shonky, Droog, Sebo K, Seth Troxler, DJ. T, Danny Daze, Deniz Kurtel, AK 1200 & others, because of his ways of overstepping genres and trends. At the same time, he’s been dedicating much of his time since 2006 to know music from a producing perspective, creating music with his own flavorful & peculiar touch, giving new textures and rhythmic variations that make him stand up from the rest. In 2012 he opened his own independent electronic music label imprint named: “Proper Slap Recordings”, a label supported internationally by: Drumcell, Atapy, SLAM, Marco Carola, Matthias Springer, Alex Rubio, Derek Marin, Sascha Robotti, Luciano, Rob B, PointBender, Lucca Doobie, Signal Deluxe, Reflux, Luciano, Al Bradley, Lars Wickinger, Daniel Sanchez, Werner Niedermeier, Richie Hawtin, Franco Bianco, Carlos Gambino, Jonny Cruz, Anderson Noise, Genetikal Twins, Pat Fontes and many others, making this the first Deep & Organic House music label based in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico – History and Heritage

Puerto Rico - History and Heritage

Christopher Columbus arrived at Puerto Rico in 1493. He originally called the island San Juan Bautista, but thanks to the gold in the river, it was soon known as Puerto Rico, or “rich port;” and the capital city took the name San Juan. Soon, Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony on its way to becoming an important military outpost.

Here Are The 12 Cities That Will Shake Up The Art World In The 21st Century
Cities like New York and Paris have long captured the art world’s attention, wooing artists, collectors, critics and curators who have hurried to call the hubs home. Other storied art havens include Los Angeles, Berlin and Hong Kong, amongst others — locales that have managed to snare auction houses or gallery giants, rounding out an entirely too sparse a map of art destinations.

R.I.P Street Artist Philip Cruz Villegas aka El Pun 18.

PUN 18

The Puerto Rican Urban Artist Philip Cruz Villegas aka El Pun 18, died around 11:00 pm yesterday, Monday 11 january 2016, in a Puerto Rico Hospital. Cruz Villegas suffered from Crohn’s disease eight years ago.
Born in 1985 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, El Pun 18’s (Philip Cruz Villegas) art is truly a reflection of his surroundings; bright, colorful, and full of life. As a matter of fact, his graphic design background lends itself to his artwork, with an obvious keen eye for this respective skill throughout his works of art. Additionally, his graphic design background contributes to his graffiti use, another skill that is at the forefront of his works with the incorporation of detailed backgrounds. When looking at El Pun18’s work, the detailed imagery within his art takes you on artistic overdose of sorts, overwhelming your mind with such complex visuals that are placed front and center throughout his murals. Cluttered, colorful images with bright, bold color palettes take you into El Pun 18’s world of scattered thought processes that are thrown onto a mural for you to decipher. He also delves into black and white color schemes to deliver the same intricate shapes, swirls, patterns, and line work that make him recognizable to his audience.
El pun18

pun 18

There are certain images that are repeated throughout El Pun18’s works. For instance, the use of the cat with a slanted eye gives you a sense that no character is left behind in his world of intense, psychedelic imagery. These characters become distorted and exaggerated to enhance the effect of the specific idea he is trying to convey at the time. What’s more, his image use runs the gamut from dark imagery such as skulls to a more happy ElPun18 with the incorporation of beautiful flowers, for example. “Big Bang” is one of El Pun 18’s signature pieces that sets the tone for what he is bringing to the art world: an explosion of ideas and thoughts he skillfully manages to squeeze into his works of art. Ultimately, the variations of images throughout his work lead his audience to believe that there isn’t a set theme to his work, but rather a constant exploration into new concepts and ideas that keep El Pun 18’s work fresh and captivating.

His good friend Mario E. Ramirez from tostfilms said: “Every moment that passes is one of learning and assess everything we have, Pun18is. Today is a day to celebrate your life and all the moments I shared with you. Thanks for including me and count on me for all the inventions you had. I will miss him dearly and continue forward like you taught me well. I love you like a brother. Rest in peace.”  I met Pun18 in one of its murals on the street Canals, where Pun created the event of Urban Art “The Canals“. Pun 18’s is sure to take you on a psychedelic art trip, and you’ll love every minute of it.”

With each edition SEL reaffirms its commitment to the rehabilitation of Santurce neighborhood through the foundation of an art circuit in the area; effort that has made the capital district in the center for contemporary artistic creation on the island and in America. Santurce is Law has been developed with the hope of seeing grow sector. The initial problem is that once the event ends, you tend to leave unused space and concept, waiting to be rescued next year and creating a cultural gap between. We are witnessing the change in Santurce community that has been produced for public art, and independent events of this nature, which are generated by the artistic community.

Radames “Juni” Figueroa selected for the 2014 Whitney Museum Biennial

June 21, 2014by remNo Comments
Radames "JUNI" Figueroa

BORN 1982 IN BAYAMÓN, PUERTO RICO
LIVES AND WORKS IN SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

Adorned with tropical plants and constructed from the odds and ends of urban living, Radamés “Juni” Figueroa’s makeshift structure installed in the Museum’s sculpture court serves as an open space for gathering, reflecting, and celebrating. Figueroa is a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, a city in which the cultural influences and political complexities of the United States and Latin America converge in the midst of a diverse topology featuring mountains, tropical forests, the beach, and the urban center.

Originally trained as a painter, Figueroa began to expand his practice to outside the studio in 2008. Much of his recent work involves creating environments that transmit the experience of living in San Juan. “Addressing such sensations,” he has said, “enables me to speak of where I come from without addressing the political in a literal way. . . . I like creating environments in which bodies interact with the work. I speak of my experiences through the work, and what I know best is life next to the sea, the heat, the music, and a relaxed aesthetic.” Recently, Figueroa has developed projects such as La Loseta, an artist-run domestic space founded as a response to the lack of exhibition venues in Puerto Rico, and Tree House—Casa Club, an architectural haven in a sustainable forest, constructed of an incongruous mixture of found materials gleaned from both the urban environment and the surrounding woods. Figueroa here similarly juxtaposes the improvisatory nature of tropical architecture with the Brutalist aesthetics of Marcel Breuer’s Whitney building, even including a chair designed by Breuer as an ironic nod to the contradictions and connections between the two structures.
